In January 2026, Walt & Ernie’s Barbershop proudly begins an exciting new chapter—moving just around the corner and down the street to 42 South Main Street in Hanover, NH, conveniently located behind Ledyard Bank. While the address is new, everything our clients love remains the same. The shop continues its long‑standing tradition in a modern, welcoming space thoughtfully designed with nostalgic touches that honor our rich history.

Founded in 1903 by namesake barbers Walter Chase and Ernie DesRoche, Walt & Ernie’s Barbershop was originally located in the historic lobby of the Hanover Inn. Since 1938, the shop has called the Davison Building on Old Nugget Alley home, becoming a beloved fixture of downtown Hanover.

By the 1970s, Walt and Ernie had retired, and ownership passed to Carley Massey, who began cutting hair at Walt & Ernie’s in 1954. From the 1980s until 2022, the shop was owned by Bob Trottier, who first joined Walt & Ernie’s as an employee in 1957 and carried on its reputation for quality, consistency, and community connection.

In true Walt & Ernie’s fashion, the ownership torch was passed once again in January 2022 to longtime barber Carol Eastman. Carol began her career at the shop in 1992, working alongside Bob, and credits his mentorship, kindness, and friendship as the inspiration behind her commitment to preserving the spirit of the shop while guiding it into the future.

Today, this authentic four‑chair barbershop remains deeply rooted in Dartmouth College, Hanover, and Upper Valley history, offering quality haircuts with friendly, familiar service. The hairstyles may have changed over the years, but the true Hanover barbershop experience hasn’t.
